Students will build on and add to their Year 7experience by using a wider range of materials and developing more advanced skills.

Unit 1 Novelty Coat Hanger

Students will investigate mechanisms, systems and control and apply this knowledge in a variety of practical experiments. They will then design and make a novelty working mechanical coat hanger which uses linkages and CAD/CAM.

Unit 2 ‘Customised Cushions’

Students will be asked to design and make a cushion for a well known retail outlet. They will undertake market research to identify a gap in the ‘teenage’ market. Students will build upon the skills learnt in Y7. They will be asked to draft their own pattern pieces. Students will be asked to provide their own fabric.

(Fabric can be obtained from school or at home).

Unit 3 ‘Just Baked’

Students will investigate products sold in bakeries and develop the appropriate skills for making bread, pastry and biscuit products. This will lead on to designing and making a biscuit for a celebration.

(Ingredients will be required for most double lessons).

Unit 4 Sporting Trophy

Students will develop skills for working with metal and plastic and use these to produce a balancing sporting trophy.

Students will need to collect pictures of sportsmen in a variety of action poses.
