Students will complete 4 units designed to give them a taste of
work at GCSE standard in each of the option areas. Subsequently,
they will undertake a manufacturing project at the end of Year 9.
Unit 1 Product Design (Graphic Products)
Students will design and make a model of a hand-held electronic
device. Ergonomics and fitness-for-purpose are key elements of this
unit.
(Catalogues which include hand-held electronic devices will be needed
for this unit.)
Unit 2 ‘Keeping your head’ (Textiles Technology)
Students will design and make a hat for a client of their choice.
Students will have the opportunity to use a range of fabrics and
equipment not previously used in Y7 & 8. A greater emphasis
will be placed on achieving quality outcomes, both in terms of folder
work and practical tasks. Students will be asked either to provide
their own fabric or buy it from school.
Unit 3 ‘Up in the Air’ (Food Technology)
Students will design and make products for in-flight meals looking
at special dietary needs e.g. vegetarian alternative, desserts and
snack foods. Detailed planning will give a focus to the practical work.
(Ingredients will be required for most double lessons.)
Unit 4 ‘Boiling Point’ (Resistant Materials Technology + Electronics)
Students will produce a novelty wall-hung electronic egg timer using a range of
modern materials and advanced manufacturing processes.
Unit 5 Manufacturing
Students will be required to mass produce and market a product. |
